The romería of Villafranco del Guadalhorce 2008 was a great success.
Hundreds of pilgrims and floats went to the Rio Grande, fulfilling a tradition that goes back 29 years.
On May 1st the pedanía of Villafranco del Guadalhorce held one of its most important festivals, the festival honoring its patron saint, Our Lady Señora María Auxiliadora, thereby fulfilling a tradition that goes back 29 years. This tradition has become more and more important with hundreds of pilgrimsaccompanying the virgin on foot or with their carts up to the Rio Grande.
The day began with the meeting of the floats in the Plaza Mayor, a beautiful spectacle that showed the hard work and love of the resident for this holiday season. The traditional Mass was held in honor of the patron and sung by the local choir.
The road to Rio Grande shone, brightened up by dancing and singing, a prelude to their arrival at the Rio Grande River, where the pilgrims were able to enjoy their sangria and paella prepared by the Escuela de Hostelería of Alhaurín el Grande and courtesy of the council. Participation is this popular event has been estimated at about 3,000 people, whole families from all over the Valle del Guadalhorce. They all enjoyed the performances of the dance groups “Aires de Villafranco”, y “Ritmos de Fiesta”.
There was also awards for the best group, flamenco costumes and best car. The Councillor for Villafranco del Guadalhorce, Micaela Naranjo said "We enjoyed a beautiful day with a great atmosphere."
