Alhaurín el Grande council urgently demands the cleaning of Rio Fahala riverbed.

The Town Council is a full Member of la Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza, the Environmental Body responsible for the conservation of riverbeds in Andalucia.

Alhaurín el Grande council has approved a proposal by Councillor for the Environment, Diego Navas, demanding urgent an cleanup of the Rio Fahala river bed by la Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza the body responsible for the maintenance of riverbed channels.

The councillor reported that there have been numerous denunciations by neighbors of the poorly maintained riverbeds run through Alhaurín el Grande, with the risks involved of both fire and floods. The council sent a copy of the report undertaken by the Municipal Agricultural Engineering, on the Rios Fahala, Arroyo Santa Maria and Arroyo Gambero to la Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza. The council has learned through the media that la Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza  is to conduct cleaning of riverbeds in the general area but excluding those on Alhaurín el Grande.

The Councillor reported the existence of a budget of more than seven million, subsidised by European funds, for cleaning and improving riverbeds but according to the report of the Municipal Agricultural engineer, in the past five years about three hundred meters only around this area have been cleaned.
 
The Councillor for the Environment also pointed out that "on 30th November, 2007, the council forwarded to la Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza an agreement by  the Board of Local Government which sought urgent upgrading of these channels, without having received a reply any so far."

Therefore, the Councillor proposed to the plenary session "to agree to request that urgent action be undertaken to include Alhaurín el Grande and, in particular, Rio Falhala in the proposed clean up of riverbeds by la Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza in order to facilitate disaster prevention". A proposal that was approved by an absolute majority.
