Bomb explodes on Malaga beach
A bomb exploded on Sunday 17th August without any casualties at Guadalmar beach in Malaga. More than 10,000 people were evacuated from a harbor area by the beach after they received a warning allegedly made by armed Basque separatist group ETA according to local officials.
A local official stated that, "There was an explosion on the small beach of Gualdalmar. There was no damage,".
A caller who said he spoke in the name of ETA warned the fire department in the beach resort of Benalmadena that three bombs would explode, the ministry said. The caller said bombs had been placed in Guadalmar, Benalmadena and on a highway linking Malaga to its international airport, a ministry spokeswoman told The Associated Press. She spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with ministry rules.
There were two further bomb alerts one for a bomb planted at a tourist parking lot at Benalmadena marina, near Malaga, the other on the motorway linking Malaga to Torremolinos near the airport.
Traffic around the port city of Malaga was gridlocked for hours following the warning and explosions.
The bomb blast on the Guadalmar beach in Malaga happened about 1:00 pm (1200 GMT), near a local hotel and they cordoned off the area about 2.15 pm.These series of bombs follow on from the bomb that went off on July 28th (torremolinos) and the four bomb that went off near a beach in Laredo and in Noja in Cantabria in the north of Spain.
ETA claimed responsibility Saturday for the four bombs in the north, but denied any involvement in the explosion in Torremolinos.
ETA is considered a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the United States.
